The Canterbury Christ Church University has been subject to evolution and development, growing rapidly in the last 60 years, from a teacher training institute to over 400 courses and a 17,000+ average student population.

The 2014 Research Excellence Framework recognised Canterbury Christ Church University’s research as ‘world leading and ‘internationally significant. Subjects that excelled in this included Allied Health Professions, politics and international studies, education, English language and literature, theology and religious studies, and others.

The 2015 Guardian Rating for UK universities recognised it at number 92 out of 119, while the 2021 Guardian University Guide ranks it at 114th and the Times University Guide at 127th.

History of Canterbury Christ Church University

The Church of England laid the foundations of Canterbury Christ Church College by founding principal, Reverend Frederic Mason to meet the need for teachers in church schools. With classes being held at the priory next to St. Martin’s Church, the first degree the CCCC offered was a Bachelor’s of Education as an extension of the Certificate in Education. From there, the university expanded into a BA in Religious Studies.

In 1995, the Canterbury Christ Church College was granted degree-giving authority by the Privy Council. It wasn’t until 2005 when the CCCC was awarded the university status by the Royal Charter, prompting the educational institute to swap out the “college” at the end with “university”. In 2009, the university received the power to grant research degrees.

Now offering over 400 courses, Canterbury Christ Church University has become more dynamic in both academic and research pursuits with new engineering and technology centres being unveiled along with new arts facilities.

From the priory next to St. Martin’s Church, this UK university has multiple campuses around Canterbury and Medway with numerous facilities. These include the Canterbury campus at North Holmes, the Sidney Cooper Gallery, Hall Place, Christ Church Sports Centre, St. George’s Centre, Medway Campus, and Salomon’s Centre for Applies Psychology.
