Overview

London Metropolitan University was established in 1848 and got university status in 2002. The university is also commonly called as London Met. It has now three sites in Holloway, Aldgate, and Shoreditch. The institution has already earned a name for its excellent education services. Its’ clear focus and mission say it all. It maintains the motto that is ‘Knowledge in Abundance’.

1. London Metropolitan University is placed in 119th place out of 130 universities- Complete University Guide 2022.
2. It ranked 87th by Guardian university league tables 2022.
3. Its’ position is 100 nationally by the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2022.
4. The institute ranked 6th in the UK for teaching quality in the new Good Uni Guide.
5. Its’ rank is 120th by the NSS 2020.

History

London Metropolitan University was formed in 1848. At first, Bishop of London and the Reverend Charles Mackenzie felt the necessity to educate young men. Then they started The Metropolitan Evening Classes to fulfill this purpose. After that, the institution has passed many years of achievements and different ups-downs. So, the university has really proud history of its’ long journey.

1848– Bishop’s used to believe in, “to improve the intellectual and moral conditions of the industrial classes”. So, according to his appeal evening classes were started. Three years later, Prince Albert was very amazed at the classes. And he permitted an annual celebration of the students’ work under his patronage.

1861- The classes were started at the City of London College. The college paid the teachers, got 800 students and a principal for the first time.

1896- In Holloway, the Northern Polytechnic Institution was opened. Its mission: ‘To promote the industrial skill, general knowledge, health and wellbeing of young men and women.

1899- Sir John Cass (1661-1718), an Alderman of the Ward of Portsoken opened Technical Institute. He established a school first and later the Technical Institute.

1900- The Northern Polytechnic earned huge success. It got doubled numbers of students by 1910, every department offered day classes also. Five years later evening degrees were available, as researched supervision on Saturdays. And, two years later, King Edward VII Nautical College was founded this year.

1927- To provide full-time courses in navigation the department of navigation was founded at the Sir John Cass Technical Institute. Then in 1929, The North Western Polytechnic started with 150 academic staff. It got over 2,200 students that year. HRH Edward, Prince of Wales started the site in Kentish Town, and cinema audiences all around the country watch the event on Pathe News.

1940- The City of London College building got fully vanished by bombing. Again in 1944, The City of London College started the new journey at Electra House, Moorgate. Till summer 2019, this building was home to the University’s Guildhall School of Business and Law. After five years the navigation’s more junior courses are transferred to the King Edward VII School under the London County Council development. The navigation department of Poplar Technical College closed in 1949. Then all courses shifted to the Sir John Cass College Technical Institute.

1950- Sir John Cass Technical Institute adopted the name, Sir John Cass College. In 1954, a floating school opened to teach students the operation of radar equipment and other modern navigational aids.

1960- The City of London College got more than 8,000. Shoreditch Technical Institute changed its’ name in 1964 and adopted to London College of Furniture.

1965- The School of Art, Architecture, and Design was found. The new college was located in Central House, opposite the Whitechapel Art Gallery. The next year White Paper published, A Plan for Polytechnics – ”to provide the means of expanding higher education … by offering courses which are relevant to the vocational aims of students and at the same time retain the flexibility which will enable these institutions to respond to rapidly changing demands”.

1971- After many changes and revolutions the new City of London Polytechnic, with 2,000 full-time and 15,000 part-time students began a journey. But, then the Northern and North Western polytechnics merged again to form the Polytechnic of North London.

1990– London College of Furniture joined the City of London Polytechnic. Two years later Further and Higher Education Act received Royal Assent, and thus, got polytechnics university status and degree awarding powers. City of London Polytechnic’s got the new title London Guildhall University. Again, the Polytechnic of North London converted to the University of North London.

2002- On 1 August, London Guildhall University merged with the University of North London. Then we got to today’s London Metropolitan University. In the UK, it was the first merger between two universities. The next year the Duke of Edinburgh, the then Patron, was awarded London Metropolitan University’s first degree.

Student Life

Student life at LMU is fantastic and easy. There are so many options for students to get information and do fun as well.

The Students’ Union is very supportive of any kind of student issue. Students here never get bored, they can take interest in sports, DJ, RJ, student magazine, journalism, researcher, graphic designer, etc. There are 50 different societies also. So, students can get fit anywhere they want and do fun.

Again, London is a dream place and it gives many benefits to the students. Besides many quality universities, it’s a city of music, comedy, and festivals. Students can enjoy doing shopping, explore exciting places and different cuisines. The diversity and work options of London always attract students here.

Living Accommodation

In a new city or country, every student thinks of a suitable and safe place to live in. Most of them search for nearer housings. Though LMU doesn’t provide any hall for students but guides them to find affordable accommodation. According to different budgets, the university assists them for-

Transport

The transport system of London is very comfortable and easy. The main city is not very far from the university. It can be traveled four ways from the London Metropolitan University. Bus, subway, taxi or foot are the four ways. Within the cheap range of costs, students can travel around the city and explore new things.
